Why 97% of Network Marketers Fail

Updated on May 25, 2014

"Wages are for Making a Living, Profits are for Making a Life." Jim Rohn

It's very important for you to understand from the start that if you work at a traditional job, you'll probably never have an opportunity to enjoy the unique benefits that network marketing can offer. Fortunately, in most cases, these benefits come without the risks that are associated with most traditional businesses, which usually require a very large investment of money and time.

The Warm Market Approach

Nearly all MLM leaders tell their newbies that the first thing they need to do is make a warm-market list. This is a list of friends and family (ie people that already know and trust you). They tell you that you need to share your business with as many of them as possible, but they never tell you the CORRECT way to approach your warm market, therefore most people are afraid, and the first time one of their friends or family makes fun of them, they will quit.

It doesn't have to be that way and you don't need to be afraid if you approach the situation correctly. The best way is to make up a small card or invite and tell your warm market contacts that you need their help. Most of them will be willing to help, and do this with the mindset that you have no intention of bringing them into your business, but tell them you would like them to critique your presentation and offer suggestions for how you might be able to improve it. Many of your friends and family will be willing to do that, and after you show them your business don't ask them if THEY'D like to join, ask them if they know anybody ELSE that might be looking for a chance to earn some extra income in their spare time. Take all of the pressure off of yourself.

The eventual problem is that your warm market is finite, and many people get stuck after they've run out of friends and family and don't have the proper mentoring to know what to do next. If you're like me, you've probably seen hundreds of videos or ads touting the need to have list-building software or lead-generating software. You DO NOT NEED any software to learn how to build your MLM business, you just need good coaching from someone who has found better more successful ways to build an MLM or any other type of Internet marketing business. Almost everything you need to build a successful business is FREE, and can be found with just a little bit of skill and ingenuity. (And perhaps a little help from someone who knows where to find the resources already.)

Social Media Marketing Do's and Don'ts

Most new network marketers understand that making use of social networks can be key in building their business, but 99% of them do it wrong right from the start. The first thing they do is change their personal Facebook profile until a business promotion page, which is a SUPER mistake. Not only is it tacky and tasteless, it is also a violation of Facebook's terms of use. If you want to have a business page on Facebook, it's FREE to make one, but keep it separate from your personal page.

The next thing most of them do wrong is start posting their products and their business opportunity on every social network they are a member of. If you want to post products, the best places are Pinterest, Manteresting, and DudePins. Do NOT post products or your business opportunity on your personal news feed or on other people's pages, unless they are Fan Pages that are specifically designed to allow you to post those things. You should also do it only on a very limited basis on your own new Facebook Fan Page.

Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter can provide you with an almost limitless resource of people who are already interested in your offer, but you need to know the RIGHT way to find them and the RIGHT way to contact them. If you SPAM your links, Facebook especially, WILL find you and WILL suspend you for at least 14 days.

The most important thing to realize about the combination of Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn is that they have combined users in excess of 1.5 BILLION. Out of 1.5 billion people, anyone should be able to find a few people who have a dream and need a vehicle to achieve that dream.

BUT, do not randomly friend request strangers and then send them e-mails promoting your business. That is another way to get suspended. Do NOT treat your status bar as a billboard for your business. There's nothing wrong with showing things on your personal profile that have to do with your dreams, such as places you'd like to go, or your dream house, or dream car, but NO products. BTW-Your personal page as a limit of 5,000 friends. Do not mass message your FB friends either.

The Definite Do's on Facebook

One of the most important things you need to do on Facebook to take advantage of your social network opportunities, you want to add your elementary school, high school, college, and work history and start reconnecting with all the people that you knew from all of those places.

Once you've connected with all those people, then you need to learn proper skills to contact them and ask them to take a look at your business. Sending them a message saying "Hey, how would you like to earn a boat load of money." is NOT the correct strategy.

In addition to your former classmates, co-workers, etc., other places you can find people that may already be open to looking at your opportunity are people who are already interested in things that you are interested in. For example, if you are into hot rods and custom cars, join some community boards that are dedicated to those things. If you can post some relevant content on those pages that other people find to be interesting, informative, or humorous, you may get connected with some of those people with common interests.

Another place to find people is people who live in your general area, or places where you used to live. Again, don't send out random friend requests. The best approach is to post good content that is of general interest to those people, such as events going on in those places, or a review of a local eating establishment, or other local business (especially if you received particularly excellent service.)

ROCK Your Network Marketing Business: How to Become a Network Marketing ROCK STAR by Sarah Robbins

You Can't Fail as Long as You Don't Quit

There are going to be days when you feel like things aren't going your way. There are going to be days that you feel like quitting. If you give in to those feelings, then you fail. If you have what it takes, you won't give in, and if you don't give in, you can succeed. The rewards for success will be worth it. There are many network marketing companies out there, and they all offer different compensation plans, but the ONE thing almost all of them have in common is the ability to develop residual and inheritable income. This is a benefit that you will NEVER get in any traditional business. There are many business that operate in multiple countries. Understand the difference between network marketing and pyramid schemes. Pyramid schemes are illegal in nearly every country around the world, and in an illegal pyramid there is never any opportunity for a consumer to receive value or for a distributor to earn more money than the person who introduced them to the business.
